ReShare : Brogramming, Interviewing, and Science Fair

Shares over Twitter and Google+ tend to get lost over the course of a day, being buried under game posts and coupons (or at least that’s what my feed generally looks like). I also comment a lot on The Grindstone. To make sure they don’t disappear in the ether of the internet, here they are again!

This week on The Grindstone:

Other Career Advice:

  • Job Interview Myths
I’m not a huge fan of Monster, but these are common sense tips that aren’t exactly obvious. Keeping them in mind will definitely bring down the anxiety during an interview.
  • Is Impatience Hindering Your Success?
This is less obvious and a genuine problem I see a lot in over-achievers. Primary lesson? Take a breath. Slow down. Things will be okay.
  • Brogramming…
This is a slippery slope. When brogramming just meant start-up guys who ‘iced’ each other, it was funny. Now being a bro becoming a job requirement? That is scary. Being a bro means working to death while trashed, as a lifestyle. Some of us like to go home. Some of us like wearing jerseys or jeans. Some of us get more work done in an hour than a ‘bro’ can do all night. If you’ve never considered yourself a ‘bro’ (men and women alike), this should scare you.
  • Don’t Call Yourself A Programmer, And Other Career Advice
I heard this only one other time when I was in college and it never made sense to me. I code, and I like to code. Now I know it means more than that. It’s not just programming, it’s also product design, time management, and communication. You can code something or build it. If you choose the latter, you’re an engineer.

General Things Geeks and Nerds Should Do:

  • Bay Area Science Fair at The Tech
Saturday, October 29 through Sunday, November 6
It’s a science fair! Tornados! Ghosts! DINNER WITH AN ASTRONAUT! Seriously, why wouldn’t you?! Thinking about it makes me hyper!
